Message from the President of NMCRS - Printed in 2011 Ball Program

As we enter our 107th year of service to the Navy and Marine Corps, I’m pleased to report that the tradition of Sailors and Marines taking care of their own continues. In 2010, the Society served nearly one in every five active duty Sailors and Marines. That’s more Marines and Sailors through our doors and more interest-free loans and grants than any year since 1993, when the size of our Navy and Marine Corps Team was significantly larger. Contemporary issues facing our clients include combat casualties and wartime operating tempo, predatory lending practices, natural disasters and the hardships associated with today’s economy. Highlights of this year’s services include:

  • Met the financial needs of Sailors and Marines 99,854 times with nearly $50 million in interest-free loans and grants
  • Visiting Nurses made 48,617 patient contacts and visits, including 18,423 with more than 1,100 combat casualty families
  • Continued the fight against predatory lenders with 51,309 active duty Sailors and Marines receiving $15.1 million in interest-free Quick Assist Loans
  • Provided $1.3 million for basic needs and services to 771 Navy and Marine Corps widows

Just as the Society relies on its 3,500 Volunteers to carry out its mission, the 2011 Navy-Marine Corps Ball Chairman, Sheri Hummer, relies on the enthusiasm, commitment and tireless efforts of some of Washington’s most dedicated and determined Volunteers – the Navy and Marine Corps spouses who comprise the Navy-Marine Corps Ball Committee. We congratulate Sheri and her terrific team who have worked so hard to make this year’s Ball such a great success. The significant, sustained support and participation of the Washington area community and corporate leadership have been key to that success, and we salute and thank our many friends – old and new – that made this evening possible.

Thank you for joining Marjorie and me at the 96th Navy-Marine Corps Ball for an evening of camaraderie, celebration and a visible expression of our continued commitment to the Sailors and Marines who defend and protect the freedoms all of us enjoy. Enjoy the evening!
